Largo Fire Rescue chartered the Largo Fire Rescue Cadet Program on July 1st, 2015, in cooperation with the Florida Fire Chiefs Association. This program is available to young men and women between the ages of 14 and 20, who have an interest in emergency services as a career. The Largo Fire Rescue Cadet Program offers the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge, and abilities in preparing the Cadet for a career in emergency services.
Cadets receive training from fire officers, paramedics, and firefighters in the basics of firefighting, Emergency Medical Services, hazardous materials, and other topics related to the fire service. Upon completion of a prescribed training program, Cadets may ride with fire and EMS units as an observer and may be permitted to assist in nonhazardous training and assignments as directed by the officer in charge.
Under the guidance of an adult senior advisor, the program has an established rank structure reflective of the fire service: Cadet Captain(s) and Lieutenant(s) serve as promoted officers to the post and are responsible for planning, scheduling, and directing program meetings and activities. This program emphasizes teamwork, self-confidence, self-discipline, and leadership.
